How The Adoption Process Works
Although this is an exciting time for your family, you should be aware of the legal requirements you must meet to complete the adoption process. The court will consider several eligibility criteria to decide if you may adopt a child. In order to qualify, you must:
- Not have a disability
- Have lived in the state of Illinois for at least the last six months
- Have a good reputation in the community
In order for a child to be eligible to be adopted, he or she must:
- Have been surrendered to an adoption agency, which consents to the adoption
- Be authorized by a court that has consented to the adoption
- Be placed in the custody of the prospective parents by the biological parents
