If you have the means and the desire, adoption is one of the most selfless actions you can take. By completing the adoption process, you will be adding another member to your family while taking advantage of the opportunity to care for another human being. Many people choose to begin, and add to, their families in this manner.
The family law attorneys at Levo-Donohoo, LLC, are here to support your adoption journey. People often do not realize how many legal requirements an adoption requires, but our office has the experience to help you navigate these issues. We have experience assisting Illinois families throughout Madison and St. Clair counties.
How The Adoption Process Works
Although this is an exciting time for your family, you should be aware of the legal requirements you must meet to complete the adoption process. The court will consider several eligibility criteria to decide if you may adopt a child. In order to qualify, you must:
Not have a disability
Have lived in the state of Illinois for at least the last six months
Have a good reputation in the community
In order for a child to be eligible to be adopted, he or she must:
Have been surrendered to an adoption agency, which consents to the adoption
Be authorized by a court that has consented to the adoption
Be placed in the custody of the prospective parents by the biological parents
